The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) exercises operational and administrative control of the Indian Navy from the Integrated Headquarters of Ministry of Defence (Navy). He is assisted by the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS) and three other Principal Staff Officers, namely the Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff (DCNS), the Chief of Personnel (COP) and the Chief of Material (COM). The cutting edge of the Indian Navy are its two Fleets, namely the Western Fleet, based at Mumbai and the Eastern Fleet, based at Visakhapatnam. Besides the Fleets, there is a Flotilla each, based at Mumbai, Visakhapatnam and Port Blair (A & N Islands), that provide Local Naval Defence in their respective regions.

Educational Qualification

Direct Entry Petty Officer
- 10+2 qualified in any stream or equivalent examination
Sports Proficiency:
- Team Games. Should have participated at International /National/State level at junior /senior level or represented a University in the Inter University tournament.
- Individual Events. Should have attained a minimum of 6th position in Nationals (seniors) or 3rd position in National (juniors) or 3rd position in the Inter University meets
Senior Secondary Recruit (SSR)
- 10+2 qualified in any stream or equivalent examination
Sports Proficiency: Should have participated at International/National/State level or represented a University in the Inter University tournament.
Matric Recruits (MR)
- 10th /equivalent qualified.
Sports Proficiency: Should have participated at International/National/State level tournament.
Age Limit
- Direct Entry Petty Officer 17 to 22 years
- Senior Secondary Recruit (SSR) 17 to 21 years
- Matric Recruits (MR) 17 to 21 years
Salary Details
- Short-listing criteria will be based on higher sports achievements.
- Call up letters to eligible short listed candidates will be posted, indicating date, time and place for selection trial.

Physical Standards
- Minimum height – 157 cms
- Weight and Chest should be proportionate.
- Minimum chest expansion of 5 cms
Medical Standards
(a) Medical examination will be conducted by authorized military doctors as per medical standard prescribed in current regulations applicable to sailors on entry.
(b) Minimum height 157 cms. Weight and Chest should be proportionate. Minimum Chest expansion of 5 cms.
(c) Good mental, medical and physical health free from any disease/ disability, likely to interfere with efficient performance of duties. Colour perception: CP II.
Selection Process
During the initial training period, a stipend of ₹ 14,600/- per month will be admissible.
On successful completion of initial training, they will be placed in Level 3 of the Defense Pay Matrix (₹ 21,700- 43,100). In addition, they will be paid MSP @ ₹ 5200/- per month plus DA (as applicable).
